Are there any links between Confucianism and the Chinese Cultural Revolution?

2021.12.07 12:27 jieyili Are there any links between Confucianism and the Chinese Cultural Revolution?

I'm reading now that Mao was vehemently Anti-Confucius and opposed the ideas of Confucianism during the Cultural Revolution because of the understanding that Confucianism was based in a feudal ideology and would therefore interfere with China's industrialisation targets.
However, in reading about Mao, and other notable leaders of any ideology across history, I always notice contradictions and hypocrisy in their actions. I'm wondering then too, are there aspects of Confucianism embedded in Mao's Cultural Revolution, or his interpretation of Communism as a whole? I would find it super interesting to see where the similarities would be between his ideology and one that he was so against. Thoughts?

2021.12.07 12:27 Happy_Window_6156 TIFU by joking about my SAT scores with my mom.

Context:
My mother has always wanted one of her kids to be very gifted academically. Well, it turns out I was that kid. I’ve always done really good in school with a 4.3 GPA and she was always proud of me.
So when we received our SAT scores yesterday I very sarcastically told her I had gotten a 1450 . Well today I figured out she took me seriously and told all of our neighbors, close family and even distant family that “her baby was going to Harvard”. She even posted on Facebook about “How proud of me she was”. The thing is I got a 1290! I don’t know what to do because, if I break the news to her she is going to be heartbroken and embarrassed but if I don’t she’s going to wonder why I’m not in HARVARD. Please help me out Reddit.
TLDR: I jokingly told my mother I did well on the SAT and now I don’t know how to break the news.

2021.12.07 12:27 P00PL0S3R How to watch the wild play on tv?

I can’t for the life of me figure out how to watch a wild game, on tv at home. Do you need a special sports cable package to watch and not get the dreaded “ this is a blackout game for your location”.
My work schedule sucks so something on demand is what I need, like for example ESPN+ app is great, I can watch any game I want at any time of the night EXCEPT THE WILD. Any help is greatly appreciated. I can’t seem to get a straight answer from googling it, other than messing with your vpn and stuff like that.

2021.12.07 12:27 Esteban-Du-Plantier I only use RO water, do I really need to descale the machine?

Is the descaling requirement based on just time/amount of use? Or is there some way the machine can tell it needs to be descaled? My RO water is like 8ppm, with essentially zero calcium/magnesium, so I cannot imagine there's any actual need to descale the machine.
I'm thinking of just running the process with water instead of the expensive solution.

2021.12.07 12:27 pycvalade LAN access local and distant with same IP

I'm trying to access the Local LAN IPs from inside and outside of the LAN through the VPN only when necessary for bandwidth reasons. I'm wanting this mainly to run TimeMachine backups to an SMB share on 10.0.0.50 without configuring 2 disks.
It seems all I can do is either access IPs locally or through the VPN but I'd like to do something like Hairpin NAT'ing (I configured it in my ER-X router) which seems to be bypassed when going through the tunnel.
Can it be done with the same IP? Or does it require to have 2 subnets that translate to one another?
Here's the current config in MacOS client:

2021.12.07 12:26 thus_spoke_tyro How important are "heroes" to history?

1. Introduction. Thomas Carlyle was a Scottish historian and philosopher. He is best remembered for his controversial classic On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and The Heroic in History(1842). Carlyle brilliantly analyses history, religion, and politics through the lens of heroes👇
2. Paganism. Carlyle argues that paganism comes from hero-worship. The "perplexed jungle" of Paganism arises from the human tendency to admire and worship other humans as well as forces of nature.
3. Hero worship is super innate. Carlyle writes that even if all "traditions, arrangements, creeds, societies" disappeared, hero worship will remain. Hero worship is not a constructed practice, it's a deep instinct. People need heroes as they need a north star on a stormy night.
4. Carlyle writes that the noblest human feeling is "admiration for one higher than himself." To find an idol is to find an ideal. From our heroes, we reverse-engineer the principles and practices we want to live by.
5. The great man theory of history. Carlyle is best remembered for this line: "The history of the world is but the biography of great men." Carlyle believed that history was made not by cultural or technological factors, but by great men.
6. Carlyle was aware that the hero worship instinct can go wrong: "Woe to him that claims obedience when it is not due." Obedience and loyalty are not things to be asked for - they can only be given as a natural response to authentic heroism.

  1. Carlyle on politics: "Find in a country the Ablest Man that exists there and raise him to the supreme place: you have a perfect government for that country; no ballot-box, parliamentary eloquence, voting, constitution-building, or other machinery whatsoever can improve it a whit.
8. Carlyle breaks down the word worship into "worth-ship." He's not promoting a blind allegiance to unworthy heroes, but precisely the opposite - a knowing allegiance to heroes who are worthy of it according to one's own judgement.
9. What is the nature of these heroes? Above all, heroes "stand upon things, and not shows of things." Heroes confront reality while others hide behind simulations and pretense. Heroes can't swallow lies no matter how "regular, decorous, or accredited by Conclaves" they are.
10. Bottom line. Carlyle's book is interesting and worthwhile because it eloquently challenges ideas that are taken for granted today. Carlyle writes that recognizing and venerating the heroic is important because the alternative is "to be forever governed by the Unheroic."

One of the apps whose update is paused is the Package Installer and I've got a hunch that that might be part of the problem.
