2021.12.07 12:48 SorryBison14 The Kids of America: Chapter 4
When Freddie and the rest of the dojo reached their destination, they had unwittingly brought along one more student than they intended to. Ellie stood in the shadows watching, wearing a black hoodie she felt was appropriate for sneaking around in. To her absolute dismay, she was watching Shifu Min and his dojo, including Freddie, scaling the walls of the Freer Gallery of Art, a building which she knew was one of the Smithsonian’s museums. As far as she could tell, no alarms had been set off.
Ellie reached for her phone, about to dial 911. Then she paused. Even though they hadn’t been speaking since their fight, she had done all this only to make sure Freddie was ok. Calling the cops on him and getting him arrested for a major felony was counter to what she actually wanted. Ellie stood nervously in the darkness. She felt like she knew what she had to do, but she wasn’t sure if she had the courage to do it. She had never broken any laws before, and had rarely even broken school rules. Now, she was thinking about breaking into the Smithsonian, if only to stop a crime from being committed. She cast off her hoodie, no longer content just to hide in the shadows.
Freddie had no idea what he was doing. Why was he breaking into this art museum in the middle of the night? Sure, his Shifu had a sad past, and Freddie felt bad for him. But he still didn’t trust him, and now he was robbing the Smithsonian?
Deep down though, Freddie knew why he was here. No one had been willing to back out of this. Peer pressure had consumed them all, without any of them saying hardly a word. Freddie was doing this for the dojo, same as everyone else, and because he had been too scared to say no.
The students broke in from the roof. To Freddie’s surprise, no alarms were going off.
“I’ve picked up a few tricks throughout my life” whispered Shifu Min. “The security system is disabled, and the guards don’t even know it. But this will not last. We must be swift.”
Shifu Min handed Ted, his most skilled student, a map of the building.
“The Mask of the Monkey King is here. You must lead your compatriots to it; I will meet you there shortly once I am sure we will not be interrupted. If you run into any security guards, you must subdue them quickly and quietly.” Shifu Min instructed, and then he melted into the darkness, gone to deal with the security guards in their office.
The group scurried down the halls, and Freddie felt his heart hammering rapidly in his chest. This was so wrong, but so incredibly exciting. The group monkey-walked down dark corridors, crouched low to the ground. A nervous but energetic smile crept onto his lips. A smile which soon died, as he heard heavy footsteps approaching. A security guard.
Ted, still crouching monkey-like, raced forward, and Freddie and Rachel moved just behind him. Freddie felt detached from his own body as he clutched the security guard in a vice grip, fingers digging into the man’s legs and waist. Rachel and Ted were likewise clinging to the man, climbing up him, reaching and grasping as Ted closed a hand around the man’s mouth. They brought the security guard to the floor. Freddie jammed a clawed hand into pressure points, and then it was over. Freddie hadn’t been watching Ted, but he had rendered the man unconscious. The man was cuffed with his own handcuffs and stashed out of sight, and the group raced on, as silent as they could be. Freddie still felt a sense of detachment, like he was watching himself from the outside.
Then they were there, at the display case containing the Mask of the Monkey King. They gathered around it, staring. Then heard light footsteps approaching, and turned expecting to see Shifu Min.
But it was not Shifu Min. It was Ellie Sharp. Freddie’s eyes widened in shock. He hadn’t been sure why she hadn’t shown up tonight, but this wasn’t the kind of party someone came late for.
“Ellie, what are you doing here?” Brian whispered. “Did Shifu Min bring you?”
“No he did not.” Ellie said. “I’m not here to rob this museum. I’m here to get you all out of here. Shifu Min is playing you. Why are you doing this? What would your families think if they knew you were here? We have to leave!”
Suddenly, hearing Ellie speak reason, the detached sensation Freddie had been feeling disappeared, and he wasn't feeling any of his earlier excitement either. Now, he was just stunned and terrified. Why had he let that creep rope him into this?
“She’s right!” Freddie agreed, going over to her. “This is… I don’t even have words for this! This is bananas!” Freddie gave her a brief look of apology which she returned, putting their earlier fight behind them.
“So earlier, when you stood me up, you just did all that to follow me here?” Brian asked, angry and having a skewed sense of priorities.
“No, they’re right!” another student piped up. “My parents are going to skin me alive!”
Other students began walking over to Freddie and Ellie, but some stood their ground, including Brian and Ted.
“How can you all betray Shifu Min like this” Ted growled. “Have you learned nothing of honor?”
“Dude” Freddie protested “We are Robbing. The. Smithsonian!!!”
“Shifu Min was the only one who was robbed.” Ted countered. “You heard what happened to him, and his family, and our own order!”
Then the conversation was suddenly interrupted.
“Ellie Sharp” came a cold voice from one of the corners of the room. “I don’t recall bringing you along today.” Shifu Min stepped forward.
“As your Shifu, I did believe you to be ready for such a journey, and I see that I was correct” Shifu frowned sternly.
“But since you are already here” he continued in a smooth, suave tone, “you may join us in liberating my people’s sacred relic, and become a true member of our family.”
“I already have a family.” Ellie spat. “I have my parents, a brother, and I have Freddie. But you aren’t family. You’re a user and a criminal, and I’m not letting you drag innocent people into your evil schemes!”
Shifu rolled his eyes. “How like an American teenager, to imagine herself a hero. Actually, you remind me a little of an old colleague of mine from back in China. She was a nuisance too, but I doubt you have her killer instinct. As for the rest of you, we are on a strict schedule, so you have one last chance to join me and my order, and become the best possible versions of yourselves.”
No one on Ellie and Freddie’s side returned to Shifu’s side, and no one else left Shifu’s side either.
“Fine then. I’m sure you all know what happens next. My loyal pupils, defeat the traitors, and do not let them approach the Mask of the Monkey King. I must extract it very carefully from its display case, to avoid setting off any alarms.”
And then everybody was kung fu fighting.
With about eight kids on each side, the battle was met, and the room was filled with brawling teenagers. Freddie reeled back, having just been punched in the face by Brian. Brian winced, shaking his hand. A punch to the enemy’s face could hurt you almost as much as the enemy. Brian should have known that, but he was clearly pissed. Freddie frowned, realizing he was no less emotional than Brian. He was nearly panicking, and also feeling a strong desire to beat the hell out of Brian.
Freddie cleared his mind, and relaxed his body. He fell into a monkey-like crouch, and the look on his face appeared to be vague and confused, as though he didn’t know where he was or what he was doing. He was utilizing the Lost Monkey style of Monkey Kung Fu. Brian was using a different style, and resumed his fierce offensive. But his wild swings were either dodged or deflected. Meanwhile, Brian never seemed to know where Freddie would strike. Brian would block a blow that never came only to take a blow elsewhere, or “dodge” straight into Freddie’s fist or foot.
Brian raced forward, grabbing at Freddie’s neck and shoving him against the museum wall.
“You are so dead you pathetic loser!” Brian snarled.
Freddie’s hands snaked into Brian’s own, his fingers digging into pressure points on Brian’s hands. Brian gasped, and Freddie slipped from his grasp, pivoting around and kicking Brian into the wall. Brian turned around and swung, but Freddie was already crouched down, and Brian missed him by a mile. He didn’t have time to do a thing before Freddie sent a punch flying into his solar plexus, knocking the wind from him. Then an uppercut, and Brian was out.
Freddie turned to find Ellie, and found Ted and Rachel lying groaning and bleeding at her feet. Then she was off, racing for Shifu Min, who was carefully removing the Mask of the Monkey King out of its case. Freddie likewise ran towards his Shifu. Or rather, his ex-Shifu, because he was so fired.
Shifu Min walked away from the battle, staring in rapture at the ornate monkey mask in his hands. Freddie and Ellie followed after him, cornering him, but he hardly seemed to notice.
“At last, the Mask of the Monkey King is mine!” Shifu Min rejoiced. He tore off his ever-present gloves, and at the same time removed his shoes. Freddie and Ellie gasped, seeing feet and hands covered in fur.
“That’s right, I no longer need to hide what I am!” Shifu screamed, his usual phlegmatic disposition disappearing, replaced with manic madness. He threw back his head, howling with a high-pitched, inhuman laughter that Freddie had only ever heard before from monkeys on TV.
Shifu Min raised up the mask, moving to place it on his head. “With the Mask of the Monkey King, my mystical powers shall increase a hundredfold! I, Mǐn Hóu, shall be invincible! Unstoppable! I shall… oof” Shifu Min, or Mǐn Hóu as he had revealed himself, grunted as Ellie flew forward, kicking him in the gut. Hóu tumbled back, and the mask flew from his hands up into the air. Freddie reached out, catching it in his hands.
Hóu snarled and raced forward, striking at his nearest enemy, Ellie. “Freddie!” Ellie screamed, barely blocking and dodging Hóu’s attacks. Freddie briefly panicked, mask in hand, not knowing what to do with the ancient relic, before simply strapping it on his head; Hóu had already prepared it for being worn. Freddie quickly tightened the leather strap Hóu attached to it, and raced forward.
“Stop!” Hóu screamed seeing his least favorite student wearing his mask, stealing the mystical powers that should belong to him! Then, he was battling both Freddie and Ellie.
Hóu should have had the clear upper hand, but he was thrown off his game, convinced Freddie was now being enhanced by the mystical powers of the monkey king, and additionally he now could no longer strike at Freddie’s head. Freddie was using the Lost Monkey style to fight, and although Hóu could normally easily overwhelm Freddie, when he was fighting two opponents at once, it was a serious problem when one of them was using a style that was famously unpredictable. And as for Ellie herself, she was not as strong or even as skilled as Hóu, but she had been training in martial arts nearly since she had learned how to walk, and moreover, was a true prodigy.
Ellie and Freddie traded rapid blows with Hóu, back and forth. Hóu attempted a powerful strike against Freddie, only for one of Ellie’s legs to deflect the blow upwards, while Freddie slid under her defending leg and struck an out at Min’s own leg. Min dodged by lifting his foot, blocking Ellie and Freddie’s punches and kicks first with only his two hands, then with his raised foot, still standing on only one leg. Soon though, a well-coordinated attack striking at both his sides forced Hóu to flip back. He landed crouched, then sprang forward towards Freddie.
Once again both sides were trading rapid blows, and Hóu attempted to grab Freddie, in the hopes of taking the mask. He did latch onto one of Freddie’s arms, only to be forced to let it go and block Ellie’s relentless assaults. Just as he began focusing on, and overwhelming, Ellie, Freddie was on him, and Hóu had to strike and twist all at once to escape Freddie’s grasp and a kick from Ellie.
Hóu struck at a charging Freddie, only Freddie pivoted away, never intending to complete the charge in the first place. Freddie spun away towards Ellie, who was striking at Hóu. Hóu deflected the blow with his wrist, but then Freddie was suddenly striking too, the two of them raining an alternating series of blows at Hóu who was forced onto the defensive.
Hóu snarled, tiring of fighting these interfering brats. He willingly took one of Ellie's strikes, feeling as though he had been hit with a hammer rather than a teenage girl’s fist. But he did not let it stop him, grabbing Ellie’s arm, he pulled her towards him and kicked a foot into her gut too fast for her to react. Ellie gasped and folded, crumbling to the ground.
“No!” Freddie shouted, suddenly losing his focus and racing forward to strike Hóu, only to be batted aside. Hóu suddenly looked relaxed and in control.
“Don’t worry Freddie, she will be fine. At least until I finish her off, but I shall show a measure of mercy and kill you first. Even the power of the Monkey King himself cannot save you, for you are a fool and an oaf. So much time wasted instructing you in Da Sheng Pi Gua! But I’ve learned a valuable lesson. I will be more selective about who I choose to teach in the future. Regardless of how wealthy or powerful their daddies are.” He sneered.
Freddie took off the mask, glaring. He made every effort to appear defeated, but inside, he remembered everything Hóu had taught him. He hadn't given up yet.
“You might kill me, you damn freak of nature, but you’ll never wear your precious mask! Remember when you taught me how to chop wooden boards in half? How about wooden masks!” Freddie raised the mask high above his head, over his bent knee, preparing to bring it down and smash it in half.
“Nooo!” Hóu screamed desperately, flying forward to snatch the mask. He closed in on Freddie, right as the mask was coming down to Freddie’s knee. Hóu was right there, so close…then the mask suddenly arced up, away from Freddie’s knee… and straight into Hóu’s face. The glaring face of the wooden monkey king filled Hóu’s vision for a split second, and then everything went dark.
Freddie sagged in relief. He had learned from Hóu how to be a cunning and tricky fighter. “Monkey see, monkey do” he muttered, collapsing in exhaustion next to Ellie.
Hóu’s hackers had only been able to disable the security system for so long, and it turns out that if you take out the security guards in the Smithsonian museum, and then have a Kung Fu war while still inside the building, it doesn’t take very long for the police to show up. The police arrived at the Freer Gallery of Art to one of the strangest incidents any of them had ever stumbled on.
It was a real mess, with the children of so many high-profile people being involved in an attempted robbery. Everything became pretty clear once the kid’s statements were taken. The police were able to sort out which side of the fight each of the students had been on, and the district attorney’s office decided to file charges only against the ones who had fought to burglarize the museum, letting the others go free. Even then, the guilty kids were only given slaps on the wrist, given that they all had rich and powerful parents. Min Wonsungi, in actuality the Chinese Warlord Mǐn Hóu, was arrested, and ended up taking all of the blame. The Chinese Heavenly Kingdom immediately demanded his extradition back to China, but given the endless list of war crimes and human rights abuses committed by the Heavenly Kingdom, and the non-existence of an extradition treaty between the two nations, the US flatly refused all demands to turn him over.
Fortunately, no one had died. Even the security guards Hóu took out were only unconscious, as Hóu had felt that killing them during his students first crime ran too high a risk of driving one or more his students to the police. The only true casualty of the battle was Hóu’s pride and dignity. For Hóu, he quite possibly had nothing to look forward to in his future beyond being a monkey in a cage. While for Freddie and Ellie, who were treated as heroes for the rest of their junior year, the future had never seemed brighter. Though their parents still grounded them for breaking into the Smithsonian in the first place.

2021.12.07 12:48 iusedtokillplants Glucose levels overnight?
F46 5’8” SW 330 CW239 GW199
I’ve lost 90 pounds since March, and starting working with a keto friendly dietician almost two months ago. It’s been really helpful for me to experiment with a constant glucose monitor to see how May body reacts to certain foods, stressors and exercise. BUT. Something that surprised her was that my glucose stays weirdly high at night. (Usually between 100-120). Does anyone have any info around that?
The app I use with my CGM has the following info: ‘It is actually fairly common to experience higher fasting and nighttime glucose values if you follow a strict very low carb/keto diet for a prolonged period of time. It appears to be a natural adaptation that the body makes to assure there is glucose present for organs that require glucose, such as the brain. ‘

2021.12.07 12:48 gregd303 Does this sound like Arthritis? or...
Hi, just seeking some thoughts and i know should probably see a health professional but getting an appointment at the doctor's is near impossible and it's just one of those things which has bothered me for years. I've mentioned to a doctor once but he didn't seem that interested 🙄
So, basically I have some moderate discomfort and stiffness with some activities. This is most noticeable when I do something like practice guitar (I'm just a hobby player).. gripping the neck of the guitar, or grip something like a paintbrush for painting a wall or fence. It feels like a burning sensation the longer I grip, and I have to take small breaks and release the grip /change hands.
Also, it's gonna sound strange but I can't really run more than a minute or so for the same reason.. my ankles feel like they are burning and stiffening up. The pain kind of stops me back to a walk.
I'm a 'reasonably healthy' male 47 years of age. I would say I've had this over 10 years, it's just something I put up with. But I am curious as to what it can be, if it's just how everyone feels, or does it sound like Arthritis?
Any opinions or help appreciated 👍🏻

I really want to read a story with as beautiful language as SOA. Please drop recommendations. Any genre!
